Roof Maintenance Tips

Your Calgary roof takes a beating from the harsh and constantly changing weather.  While a typical roof will last between 10 and 50 years, regular inspections and maintenance will help prevent major roofing damage and extend its life. Here are some tips to get the most out of your roof and help prevent more serious and costly damage to your roof and home.

Calgary Roof Repair and Maintenance

Perform Regular Roof Inspections

Try to inspect your roof at least twice a year. Spring and fall are the best times, but it's a good idea to keep an eye out for signs of damage all year round. Spring roof inspections are a good idea to see if your roof had any winter damage, particularly from ice dams or other water buildup, along with regular wear and tear.  Fall inspections and roof repairs can help prevent potential damage before the winter starts.

One of the biggest issues is the buildup of leaves and other debris on your roof that should be cleared before snow begins to accumulate. If you notice more serious issues that you can’t resolve yourself, Tony William is happy to help. Give us a call and we can estimate the extent of the damage and make necessary repairs. It's important to note that roofing repairs and replacement can be made all winter, but can be interrupted by excessively cold or wet weather.

Clean Gutters and Clear Leaves

A lot of roof damage is caused by clogged eavestroughs or gutters, so making sure to clean them out during your inspections is a good way to prevent easily avoidable problems. Also watch out for buildups of leaves on your roof. Piles of leaves will collect moisture and decompose, causing leaks and mould.

Watch for Broken Shingles

Even the smallest damage to your roof can later lead to major problems and expensive repairs. Both during your bi-annual roof inspection and after particularly harsh weather, walk around your home and look out for any broken shingles. Broken or worn out shingles can cause water to leak through your roof and if not dealt with swiftly, can result in major structural damage. Also, watch out for excessive granules from the roofing material at the end of your downspouts. They are a sign your roof is wearing our or has been damaged.

Check for Animals and Insects

Inspect your roof for signs of small critters, bird nests and insects. Any of these will make your roof their home if you let them, and unfortunately, this can lead to serious roof deterioration and consequently repairs. If you find any signs of animals inhabiting your roof, call a specialized company to deal with the issue.

Check Underneath your Roof

It’s a good idea to also inspect the attic. Sometimes, you won’t be able to see direct damage, but any visible water leaks, dark spots, or warped wood can indicate the beginning of a larger problem. If you notice any of these warning signs, give us a call so we can professionally evaluate the extent of the damage.

Don't wait for Roofing Repairs

If you find any problems during your spring or fall roof inspections, try to address them as soon as possible. Immediate cleaning and minor roofing repairs can often prevent extensive damage and more expensive repairs in the future. You can repair some of the smaller issues on your own, but for larger repairs Tony William Roofing & Exteriors can help. Our experienced contractors have completed more than 3500 roofing and siding projects across Calgary since 2008.

It might seem tedious, but roofing inspection and maintenance can prevent damage and save you thousands of dollars in repairs. Remember to inspect your roof a couple of times per year - in spring and fall - and do spot checks after particularly extreme weather. Most importantly, attend to any issues you may find right away - small investments throughout the lifespan of your roof will pay off in the long-run.
